5 Tips For a Safe and Fun 4th of July

Independence Day is just around the corner, when millions of people around America will celebrate the founding of our nation and our declaration of independence from the British Empire. With all the celebration comes the risk of danger, so here are 5 tips for a safe and fun 4th of July.

5. Only Let Adults Light Fireworks

While they make a beautiful display, fireworks can cause severe burns, permanent injuries, and even death. Let the kids enjoy the fireworks by watching the show from a safe distance.

4. Fireworks and Alcohol Don’t Mix

Much like a child, a person who has had too much alcohol is a risk to both himself/herself and others if allowed to interact with fireworks. Make the designated driver double as the designated lighter to ensure everyone wakes up the next day safe and sound.

3. Set Off Fireworks in Designated Areas

Many home developments and apartment complexes have covenants and restrictions about fireworks, so be sure to check with your homeowner’s association or management before setting off fireworks.

2. Always Keep a Supply of Water Handy

Summer is really heating up by July 4th, and that means dry leaves and grass, as well as homes can quickly be set ablaze by an errant firework. A garden hose or even buckets of water can mean the difference between “disaster averted” and “blazing inferno.”

1. Clean Up When You’re Done

Old fireworks can be dangerous for children, pets, and wildlife. Make sure you throw as much of the debris as possible in the trash, but not before soaking it in water to ensure that it won’t start a fire!
